If a student trusts you enough to reveal a dark truth, it's important to take action. They are reaching out for a reason even if they do not yet know it themselves; they need help.

First and foremost, if the student is in immediate danger, contact the relevant authorities and administrators right away.

However, if the danger is passed or not immediate, I always like to talk to the student first. I'll ask them to stay after class (or school) the next day. When they arrive in my room, I sit with them at a table, paper in hand. I usually say, "Your essay was powerful. I was wondering if we could talk more about it?" Students usually say yes at this point. If they don't immediately say anything else, I might say, "Could you tell me more about [whatever caught my attention in the essay]," or , "what inspired this work," if they were vague in the essay.

Sometimes students respond with a deluge of tears and more about what happened; I respond with comfort and ascertain that they are safe through questioning.

Other times, students remain stoic.

In both cases, I always offer a listening ear in the future and list others in the school (our counselor, primarily) who can be a support. If it seems like counseling will definitely help, I'll ask if I can share the information with our counselor myself and help set up a meeting.

After meeting with the student, I always touch base with our counselor just to share what I've learned in case other issues arise. She may not take action right away if it was not requested by the student, but it's good for her to have context.
