Reflection: Trust and Respect Smooth Sailing: Reading Poetry with Fluency - Section 4: Demonstrate Skills

 

I should mention here that the feedback partners are getting from each other does not just happen naturally.  Instead, I invest valuable time with my students throughout the year working on how to have conversations and how to support one another when talking or sharing ideas.  The same is true when we provide each other feedback.  We have previously had conversations about how to kindly provide feedback, what "good" (or quality) feedback looks like, and how great feedback can only help us improve!  It's through this cooperative learning that I find students really learn to trust and respect each other as learners, gaining the unwritten understanding that we are all truly capable of helping each other learn and improve our skills, regardless of what others may assume "we bring to the table".  Something that I love to share with my students during these conversations is that collaboration and providing feedback is something that adults do all the time!  I share with the students how I work with other members of my teaching team and our principal, and that because of these teachers and administrators, I have learned and improved so much of what I do each day with my students!  I think this component of the lesson is extremely valuable-in so many ways!

Big Idea: In this lesson, students will work on reading poetry fluently, and then share their readings with the class.
