Reflection: Routines and Procedures The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School- Sorting - Section 2: Presentation of Lesson

 

While having each student take the first bite of their cookie, I found it easy to keep the students waiting for their turn engaged.  They were eager to get their turn, but patient because they knew that they wouldn't get their cookie if they were not following the rules.  It was more difficult to keep the students engaged who had already had their cookie.  By the time I got to the fourth table of students, the first table was getting a bit restless.  You'll notice on our graph that a few are colored. 

I suggested students get out their crayons and add some color to their gingerbread man while they waited.   This kept those students in their seats and quiet while the remaining students got their cookie.  I think in the future I may allow all students to decorate their gingerbread man while other students are taking a bite.  After we created the graph, several students asked which one was theirs.  If the cookies were decorated, they would be able to find their own and I think they would be able to make a stronger connection between the graph and the activity where we sorted ourselves.

Big Idea: The Gingerbread Man Loose in School is a wonderful story to read in combination with a tour of the school. This lesson turns a follow up gingerbread man cookie snack into a fun math lesson with sorting and graphing!
