Reflection: Perseverance Simplifying Exponential Expressions, Day 1 - Section 3: Checking Progress


In section III of Exponents & nth Roots, I find that many student rush.  They see a patter in the first two columns: column one is always 2 and column two is always 3.  Well, that must mean that column three is always 4!

Not so fast!  If they take a closer look, they'll see that the pattern doesn't hold.  There's a difference between recognizing patterns in mathematics and recognizing patterns in Mr. Nazeck's choice of problems.  You can usually generalize the mathematical patterns (like b^1 = b) because mathematics is a logical and coherent body of knowledge.  Mr. Nazeck's choice of problems, on the other hand, may not be quite so coherent...
