Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Using Text Structures in Our Writing - Section 3: Independent Practice

 

When I introduce any new skills I usually introduce one at time. Since we had used two of the text structures for brainstorming, I introduced all three today. This worked well for students because if they were uncomfortable trying out a structure they were given an option to revise a familiar one.

In order to develop a full understanding, I always try to introduce a new skill in which students have some background knowledge and are given some sort of choice. All but 5 students (I have 27) tried out descriptive writing, while the others revised. This tells me that students were challenging themselves to write in a different way then they had in the past couple of days. This also tells me that they are ready for a new structure!
