Reflection: High Expectations Do You "Sea" What I "Sea"? - Section 4: Demonstrate Skills and Assessment


As I walked around at this point in the lesson, some students shared with me that they were unsure about their point of view.  I think the CCSS have really "upped the ante" in a sense, as they demand students to demonstrate thinking, on a much more independent, deeper level then I feel we may have required from our students in the past.  The rigor is certainly evident to me, and it's times like this, when my students look to me as if I might give them an answer, that I think my students sense the rigor or higher expectations as well.  However, when this occurs, I think it's important that I guide my students to the level of thinking I expect.  Through question, I have the student almost lead themselves to their answer.  For example, with one of the students that was unsure about their point of view, I asked the following questions:  

-What poem did you read?  

-What did you think about when you read this poem?  

-What is your point of view on this poem then?  

-Do you think the poet had the same point of view as you?  

-Why or why not?  

I think guiding the students into this level of thinking, of analyzing text and their own thought, is a great way to support students with this rigorous expectation, but at the same time, ensuring their success!

Objective: SWBAT refer to parts of poems when speaking or writing and explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.

Big Idea: In this lesson, students will share poems that are inspired by the sea. As they listen to and read poems, they will make drawings of what they see in their minds, thinking about each stanza as they build upon each other, to develop their own point of view
