Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Discovering Fairytales Day 1 of 2 - Section 7: Identifying Key Details


I over-planned with this lesson and tried doing too much. My students did not get very far with their written recounting, and I can see why. My students are beginning to build reading stamina. The reading took too much energy and focus, and they didn't have much left to devote to the graphic organizer. While I love that many of them challenged themselves and read longer text that they are accustomed to reading, it impacted their written retell. This is the reality of my classroom at this point in the year. Even in the sample where my student provides Great Key Details he only manages to do the beginning.

Therefore, I decided to continue with this lesson for tomorrow.

Lesson 1 of 5

Objective: SWBAT to identify key details in a fairytale and use those details when retelling the story to a peer.

Big Idea: Settings: castles, forests, and towns. Characters: heroes, villains, peasants and royalty. Fairytales offer us magical story elements that are fun to identify and retell!
