Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Coordinate Grid Introduction - Section 1: Opener

Previously the coordinate grid was introduced in grade 2 in the state of Michigan.  Now, with the introduction of CCSS, the first time students will see coordinate grids is in fifth grade.  That is a pretty big jump.

I feel as though understanding the coordinate grid system has a lot to do with spatial reasoning.  I'm not exactly sure that a second grader has a good grasp on spatial reasoning so I feel as the jump to fifth grade is much more appropriate.

One of the struggles with implementing CCSS is definitely adjusting to the new standards alignment.  Certainly not a bad thing!  By realigning the standards I really feel Common Core has allowed teachers to dive deeper into content knowledge.
