Reflection: Classroom Setup Pattern Blocks Exploration - Section 2: Practice

 

 

In my room I have an area where there is space for all students to sit on the carpet.  I use this space daily to teach some sort of mini-lesson and moving the students to another portion of the room usually gets them re-engaged if they start to get unfocused.  It is extremely important to set up expectations for this area of the room.   I have outlined the expectations I have for students in the practice section of this lesson. 

That being said, at the beginning of the year my students really struggled with these procedures.  It really takes constant reminders for the first few weeks in order get this small area set up.  One of the things I usually have to tell students in that they should make a good choice of who they sit next to.  It is very easy to want to sit next to your best buddy but that might not always be the best learning opportunity.  Eventually the students figure it out and look forward to this time of the day.  As fifth graders I do get them complaining about sitting on the floor for extended periods of time.  For that reason, I usually don’t have them on the floor for any more than 20 minutes at a time.

Lesson 3 of 22

Objective: Students will explore basic two-dimensional shapes and make observations about their attributes.

Big Idea: Two-dimensional shapes are the building blocks of fifth grade geometry and must be mastered in order to move on three-dimensional shapes.
