Reflection: Checks for Understanding Subtracting with Partners of 100 - Section 4: Closing

 

The students all wrote a subtraction word problem based on subtracting partners of 100. It was exciting to see that no one tried to write an addition problem. Everyone had a problem, a question and a number sentence.

We also had enough time for me to read each problem and to let students try to answer the problems. The students were using the partners of 10 and 100 to figure out the answers. It was not just one or two students answering the questions but I could see that all of the students were engaged and excited about figuring out the subtraction problems.

Students were able to relate addition to subtraction, and partners of ten to partners of one hundred. They were showing mastery of the ability to fluently add and subtract tens within 100 as is expected with the Common Core Standards.

Objective: SWBAT apply their knowledge of partners of 100 to solve difference problems with whole numbers using base-ten notation.

Big Idea: When subtracting ten from a 2 digit number, students should be able to compute the answer as fluently and comfortably as do when they add ten to a 2 digit number.
