Reflection: Student Ownership Novel Discussion, Day Five - Section 1: Do Now: Character Opinions

 

Some students may be tempted to claim, "I wrote what [insert previous student's name] just said." These students are either unprepared or uncomfortable sharing their thoughts.

To avoid this scenario, I ask students to write their responses first; this way, they have something to read, which is more comfortable than "winging it" without a script.

If I still get a "What he said" response, I ask for an addition--what else happens in the book that supports that point?

Students quickly realize that falling back on someone else's work will not allow them to evade the question.
