Reflection: Checks for Understanding Constructing a Rhetorical Situation - Section 5: Sharing Situations


It turned out that we didn't have a lot of time for sharing, and the sharing ended up being a different context because they had a hard time writing due to their not looking as closely at the audience.  I had one group explain their issue (that students with privileges like Honor society or seniors should be able to buy coffee from the school coffee shop that is for staff only), and then talk about some of the challenges they had in trying to write their statement.  When answering, they kept wanting to give reasons why they think they should be able to, thinking about their own feelings rather than the audiences.  I challenged many of their responses to emphasize the point of knowing their audience.  For example, when they said that many students bring coffee to school and have cups in their hands, I said that might show a problem that needs to be addressed, that so many kids are coming to school caffeinated.  Eventually, I suggested one one way to create credibility as responsible young adults would be to tell stories of their interactions with adults in the morning before they'd had their coffee--that adults have modeled this behavior for years--and use this that in a world that demands that people be ready to work long days, coffee is an important part.  Done thoughtfully, the persona is a responsible young adult rather than whiny kid wanting what the grown-ups have. 

I also revisited the rhetorical triangle to show how the points are interacting in this case, and why all three are important; and also why the idea of persona is important to think about, because that pushes you to think about the audience.

We will pick this up for a few minutes tomorrow, but I think the challenge they had was where the learning happened, showing how thoughtful they have to be in looking at the rhetorical situation.
