## Reflection: ELL Students Comparing Numbers to 10,000,000 - Section 4: Elevator Speech

For some reason, students have a hard time with the place value concept a numbers become larger. They think because they see 9s in a number that it is automatically larger. I find stacking numbers on top of each other, as if you were going to add using the "standard" algorithm, helps students see which is larger. You will need to model this:

922,999

1,221345

Students almost always think the first number is larger until they see them stacked! If you can get students in the habit of stacking to compare, it really helps. This is a great tool for ELL and struggling learners!
