## Reflection: High Expectations Working with Numbers to 10,000,000 Day 2 - Standard to Word form with Numbers - Section 4: Elevator Speech

Word form, Standard Form and Expanded Form of EVERY number is essential knowledge for students. It is also a great area for differentiation. I like to let students pick the numbers they are going to work with, which allows them to feel successful! This is also an area that I find ELL students need the most support. Give them a chart of vocabulary to work with and make sure to model for them. This is also supportive to struggling learners as well. Challenge those advanced kids to test each other, they LOVE this.

These lesson of Place Value are lessons I teach at the start of the year. Do not assume your students understand Place Value. It is the cornerstone of the whole year. Games are a great way for students to work with Place Value and develop their understanding. My students LOVE learning in this environment.

You don't have to just use these games, get creative. Think Dice, Cards, anything to get them excited. Check your local game store, or even thrift stores. There are a lot of games that use place value. Or take a old game and give it new rules!

Do not short change place value. It is too important for the students to not have a solid knowledge of what it means!

Place Value, how Important you are!
