Reflection: Diverse Entry Points Finding Evidence from the Text: Character Traits - Section 2: Practice


I realized after I sent them to do their own work that they may be able to describe actions as being "mean" or "nice" but not have the vocabulary to actually described the character in a detailed way. A better way to support students is to provide a list of grade level appropriate character traits or personality traits that they can draw from. They still show you their understanding by supporting their descriptions with actions from the text but this way they can be more specific.

Objective: SWBAT to describe a character from their book and support their description with evidence from the book.

Big Idea: This lesson helps students to think about who the characters in their book are and eventually make personal connections with the characters in order to understand them better.
