Reflection: Homework Close Reading: James Baldwin Talks to Teachers - Section 3: One Question, One Passage at a Time


I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the students today.   They seemed to read the piece for the most part, but not very closely, and most of them did not complete all of the questions.   This was evident when I asked them to talk with each other about the piece; the discussions were not as pointed as they have been.  This is one of the first more “classic” pieces we’ve read in the course—and probably the first that was far out of their immediate field of knowledge.  A couple of students said it was somewhat difficult for them to understand.  I acknowledged this, but also told them I didn’t have a great deal of sympathy, since the questions point to specific questions, and a requirement of AP is reading a wide variety of texts (I also asked what they planned to do when they got a text like this on the exam—skip it?).  After this, we did look at a few of the questions very closely, and the students were quite engaged (they are good, conscientious students, and just need a reminder of that once in a while!).  I wasn’t going to let them off the hook, though, so I sent them home with the task of answering all the questions they should have done for today.
