Reflection: Learning Communities RTI Understanding the Equals Sign: What does it really mean? - Section 6: Science Extension and Connection: Equilibrium and Flight

I have learned that being able to communicate the importance of Common Core and NGSS is best done through including community into the classroom and allowing them to witness the impact.

Elizabeth earned her Gold Award from Girl Scouts through me and learned a great deal about classroom management, inquiry, developing an environment that encouraged trial and error, questioning, and application. We connected this awesome science lesson to mathematical principals learned in the past and connected these things to understanding scientific and engineering principals. It was great to be able to spend time with this exceptional senior in high school who is thinking about becoming a teacher of science. I can't express how wonderful it was to be able to share my passion for teaching and help her learn about teaching an inquiry lesson.

The more we extend ourselves as teachers of CCSS and NGSS to the outer community, the more deeply others understand the value and developmental appropriateness of the standards and realize how it is benefitting our students.

RTI Understanding the Equals Sign: What does it really mean?

Unit 10: Addition and Subtraction: Algorithms to One Million
Lesson 2 of 7

Objective: SWBAT demonstrate and explain what an equals sign means in an equation so they can later solve for an unknown.

Big Idea: Using a balance scale helps students make a connection to what equals really means: balance! This essential concept lays down the foundation for many of our 4th grade CCSS standards in regard to equations.
