Reflection: High Quality Task Building A Flashlight - Performance Assessment Day - Section 2: Independent Investigation


I find that students are more able to be successful with their writing activity if they have practiced writing, "How To" paragraphs. We practice this in Language Arts by writing the steps to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I bring in the peanut butter (or alternative nut butter) and jelly and bread, etc. to school and follow the steps verbatim. This often leads to me placing the jar of butter directly on the bread bag since the directions did not tell me to open the jar and insert the knife and open the bread bag and retrieve two slices of bread. 

Although this activity causes great hilarity, it highlights the need for excellent details when writing a "How To" paragraph. You can find an example of this lesson plan at peanut butter and jelly lesson.
