Reflection: Student Ownership Introducing the new Science Standards - Section 4: Elaborate/Evaluate

Teachers should always explain to their students what they will be learning whether it's done verbally, or you write the lesson objectives on the board each day. I felt that explaining and discussing the NGSS standards with my students at the beginning of the year was important, especially considering that they have been written as 3 dimensional standards. I wanted to make sure that the students made connections to the science concepts that they have previously learned so I started the lesson with discussing the Disciplinary Core Ideas. We then talked about the Science and Engineering Practices that would be the how of the learning of the new standards. Finally, I taught them about the Crosscutting Concepts and I connected these to Sandra Kaplan's Depth and Complexity prompts.
