Reflection: Student Feedback Adaptations - Section 3: Guided Practice

Self-reflection is an important component of students’ academic growth.  Often, students are not self-aware and lack a true and accurate view of their work and work performance.  I like the peer commentary process because it affords students a chance to see how their work is viewed by peers in the same class, who have received the same instruction.  The feedback allows them to view their work through the eyes of a peer and reflect on how they might improve.  Because students in the age-group are greatly influenced by their peers, the feedback can be a powerful tool to help drive the quality of their work products.

The peer commentary process is intended to afford students a different perspective from the teacher.  Surprisingly, I find that students, when they understand the content that they are reviewing, tend to be more stringent in the evaluation than me.  Conversely, students who do not understand the content tend to be more lenient than me when they are reviewing a peer’s work.
