Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Converting between Degrees and Radians - Section 1: Activating Prior Knowledge

 

One of my favorite shifts in the CCSS is the emphasis on structure. When I think back on my own learning of the formula C = 2pi r, for example. It was literally just some symbols to remember so that I could crank out circumference when ever given radius or, God forbid, diameter.

But now, looking at the formula with an eye for structure, I see the formula as indicating that the circumference of a circle is made of of exactly 2 pi radii...it even rhymes when you say it structurally!

This makes concept of radians crystal clear and math starts to make more and more sense. This is what I want for my students for them to look at math and start to see the meaning...hopefully much earlier than I did.
