Reflection: Intervention and Extension Comparing and Graphing Quadratic Functions in Different Forms - Section 2: Partner Activity

 

This is one of my favorite lesson to do from the Mathematical Design Collaborative.  It allows students to explore equivalent forms of Quadratic Functions in:

  1. Standard Form
  2. Vertex Form
  3. Intercept Form

It provides some pieces of the equation, while leaving enough missing for the students to have to think about how to work between each form.  As students are working, it allows me to walk around the room, and question students.

This questioning allows me to assess the level of the student as:

0-No understanding

1- Developing

2- Emerging

3-Proficient

4-Advanced

It also lets me see if some students need help with only one certain form.  As well as see if advanced students need an extension.

Objective: SWBAT match paper dominoes when given different structures of Quadratic Equations to their graphs by complete missing information of the key features of each structure.

Big Idea: To go deeper, not wider! Identify misconceptions, and expert learners to teach other students.
