Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Character and Setting Pyramids - Section 6: Closure


If the comprehension skill of the week is to identify characters and setting, it is very common for teachers to read the story with their students and then ask them questions about the characters and setting. I know I have done this before. I am always trying to challenge myself and my students so I knew I wanted to make these pyramids even if it meant more work for me to prepare them. One of the shifts in the Common Core standards is writing to sources.  We need to have our students writing as much as possible, not just in writing class.  You can implement writing in your reading activities with a simple activity like this.  I also knew I would be able to assess every student with this activity, not just the ones who are eager to answer my questions. 

If you look at the student work that I have displayed in this section, I see that all students were able to tell me what  most of the characters and some of the settings were. Some students put the pop up characters in the pyramid and didn't mention them.  This is a focus for future work with character and setting.  My students understand the concept. No one got the characters and the settings confused.   Student number three is one of my students who goes to intervention for an hour a day.  For a student who struggles with reading and writing, they really tried to convey their understanding with their writing. 

To improve the project for next time, I will require students to draw some pop up details that show the setting.  I have the clip art for the characters, but the setting really isn't represented in the artwork.  This will help with student's understanding as well.

Unit 1: Reading Comprehension

Objective: SWBAT describe the characters and setting in a story through the use of written responses and illustrations.

Big Idea: In this lesson, students will practice accountable talk with a partner to describe and write about the characters and setting in a story. Students will create an illustration pyramid to go along with their written work.
