I enjoyed looking at students’ work in this problem because there were so many ways for them to make sense of the problem.  Students used a variety of mathematical tools, which included trigonometry, similar triangles, proportional reasoning, angle relationships on parallel lines, making use of structure by adding lines or redrawing the figure to either draw the figure to scale or to isolate certain shapes like right triangles or trapezoids.  Most students did not seem to see a direct path to the solution, which provided an opportunity for them to persevere and try other strategies to work through the problem.
