Reflection: Trust and Respect A Communication Challenge - Section 3: Discussion and Reflection


This task sometimes creates conflict in the classroom. Students sometimes get very frustrated with each other and can disengage from the activity. I think this is a good learning opportunity for students to learn about how to talk to each other and hang in even when the going gets tough.  As the teacher, I walk a fine line in this lesson as I try not to intervene in the groups but of course I have to hold the safe space of the classroom. Students who struggle working with others will be challenged by this activity!

Unit 1: Introduction to Algebra: Focus on Problem Solving

Objective: SWBAT communicate verbally about mathematics in order to solve a group challenge. SWBAT examine and begin to understand group dynamics.

Big Idea: What's so important about communicating and working together? Students explore what it means to communicate in math class in order to solve a group challenge.
