Reflection: High Expectations Midterm Part 2 - Section 1: Midterm Exam

After looking at students’ work on this problem, I realized that this was one of the most authentically open-ended problems I have ever used on an exam. I especially appreciated that this problem essentially mimicked the type of investigative work we do in class, where a hunch turns into a conjecture we investigate and possibly prove.

The problem targeted students’ higher order thinking skills, asking them to create a design to ultimately use as a basis for a mathematical argument about the relationship between rotational and line symmetry.
