Reflection: Safety A Good Cup O' Joe - Section 4: Elaborate

This portion of the lesson may be a good time to discuss the effects of caffeine on the body. I have found an interesting article, Caffeine and My Body, that I like to share with students as they sample their beverage. There is an epidemic concerning students (typically high school and college) overusing caffeine as a study aid, medication, or just as a result of the "Starbucks lifestyle". While caffeine can be harmless, I find that this is a good time to discuss both the positive and negative effects and to calculate their own caffeine consumption for the drink they are currently enjoying. We discuss how many of these drinks are acceptable to drink per week and per day, which foods and drinks contain higher levels of caffeine, and the effects of the over-consumption of caffeine products.
