Reflection: High Quality Task Percent Problems in Context - Section 7: Modified: Independent Exploration & Closing

 

I taught this lesson twice this school year. The first time, after quizzing the students, I realized that I did not do as good a job teaching them the concept of percent as well as I thought. For this reason, I revisited this concept in another way. Instead of simply using a worksheet, I set up an authentic experience where students are doing something that they would do in the real world... Shop. 

This task went very well. It was rigorous, made them think on a different level, they asked excellent questions that let me know that they were truly thinking about what they were doing and not just doing. Furthermore, the students enjoyed completing the task.

For this reason, I recommend that you teach this lesson over a two, possibly three day period, using this modified Independent Exploration... However, I do believe that the previous Independent Exploration also hold merit and can be used. If you decide to teach this lesson over a 2 or 3 day period, you can actually do both sections.
