Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources - Section 2: Warm Up

 

Use of the Class Poster Throughout the Lesson 

The poster that is introduced in the warm up section of this lesson will be used in each of the other sections of the lesson as well.  The poster is used to begin the lesson by providing students with the definition of a resource.  They then have to apply that definition to help them differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable resources.  

In the guided practice section, I add the definitions for nonrenewable and renewable resources that students came up with.  I use this as a way to introduce fossil fuels as nonrenewable resources which leads us right into the video that is shown in this section.

I refer back to the poster, reviewing the definitions, before adding examples of each.  In the explore section of the lesson, students grouped examples of resources as either renewable or nonrenewable resources.  I use these pictures on the poster as well.  By reviewing the poster as I add the pictures I am providing students with the opportunity to hear and see the information again.  This helps reach the audio learners as well as the visual and the repetition is especially beneficial to the ESE and ELL students.

I pull the overhead screen down to cover the poster before passing out the exit ticket.  Seeing it up there throughout the lesson gives students a visual they can refer back to while completing the assessment, even though they can't physically see it at this point.

Objective: SWBAT differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable energy sources and identify advantages and disadvantages of both.

Big Idea: Students learn the difference between renewable and nonrenewable energy resources and then classify given examples of each.
