Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Racing Molecules - Section 3: Students in Action


It is easy for students to memorize that temperature is the measurement of how fast molecules are moving.

This lesson is designed to move past the fact and introduce multi-dimensional levels of understanding.

Students have an opportunity to "see" the molecules in action as the dye moves throughout the cups of different temperatures of water. 

Next students also apply a mathematical formula to calculate the speed of the molecule movement and compare the speed of cars, sound and light.

The lab experience in this lesson gives students a deeper understanding of temperature.

Big Idea: Temperature is the measurement of the average energy of particles in a system. but just how fast are they moving? Faster than a speeding car? Faster than the speed of sound? Faster than the speed of light?
