Reflection: Rigor Company Erosion Solutions - Section 4: Lab Overview

 

In the last lesson, companies (student teams) designed to erosion solutions. Then the companies chose which design would be built and tested first and second. Due to this course of action, this lesson became a 2 day project, because the kiddos needed the time to modify their design and test again. None of the companies were willing to move to the next design on the first day and some teams stayed at recess to modify and test again.

Which has brought me to the realization, the companies do not need to test 2 different designs. Instead, companies develop 2 designs, which they did on the previous lesson, then decide which is the design to test, maybe incorporating aspects of both designs and ultimately creating a 3rd design.

Encouraging the teams to choose from the 2 designs, or develop a 3rd based on both ideas, provides an authentic way for students to explain their design and support their claim as to how the design elements stop erosion.

Next time I do this lesson, I will take this path.

Objective: SWBAT build and and make observtions on 2 different solutions to stop or slow down erosion.

Big Idea: Companies test at least 2 possible erosion solutions to prepare for their presentation for the Rock Away town council.
