Paint the Picture

In this lesson, Day 2- Making Food Through Photosynthesis-A Recipe for Plants, students had the opportunity to represent their understanding about photosynthesis in a visual way by using the strategy “Painting the Picture.” With this strategy, students had the chance to demonstrate their understanding of the photosynthesis process by modeling, drawing, or diagramming it.  Providing student the chance to visually represent their thinking is a unique way for students to creatively synthesize the content and concepts within the lesson. The overall focus is the information visually represented rather than the artistic abilities. The purpose is to “see” students thinking process and understanding of a concept. It helps the teacher identify areas of misconceptions or misunderstandings.

Painting the Picture strategy can be used in various ways. It can be independently assigned or part of a small group or partner assignment. This strategy can ideally promote student learning by having students explain their representation to a partner, small group, or the class. It reinforces the concepts presented within the lesson.

I found my students to be very successful with strategy. For their assignment, I had them work in small groups to come up with a visual way of representing photosynthesis. I left the assignment open to creativity and uniqueness of visually presenting the photosynthesis process. What I discovered was a variety of one of a kind example.  Pictures of the photosynthesis process ranged from comic strips, to mathematical equations, to diagrams, to pictorial posters.  I was amazed at the variety of illustrations representing the photosynthesis process as well as the discourse that went on between group members as they decided upon the type of illustration they would create.  I find when I give my students more opportunity to show their learning, the end product is creative and unique.
