Reflection: Rigor Animal Guest #1 (Meet the Gecko!) - Section 2: Explore

 

Teaching students to theorize requires constant attention to precision.  Students are quick to theorize and jump to conclusions based on interesting ideas without any proof to support their claims. As I teach this lesson early in the year, I use it as a way to support students in the initial process of generating claims, and differentiating between a claim and a factual statement. In this lesson, their claims are related to the purposes of the physical, behavioral and habitat characteristics of our animal guest. Why is this such a tricky process?  I have to be vigilant about redirecting them when they claim that these ideas are fact.  

For example, a Tucson student might say that ants live underground to stay out of the desert heat.  Of course, ants live underground in all types of environments so the fact that ants in our desert live underground does not lead as logically as they think to the statement that they do this to avoid the heat.  Instead, I would encourage the student to state that:  The ants live underground.  I see that they are out during different times of day.  I wonder if they spend more time underground when it is hot? I wonder if they live underground to escape the heat?  I wonder if ants in cooler places spend more time above ground?

Unit 8: Animal Guests
Lesson 2 of 4

Objective: SWBAT record specific observations about an animal. They will then discuss how its physical features and behaviors may help or hinder it in the local environment.

Big Idea: An animal's ability to survive in a given environment depends on a complex set of innate species characteristics, individual traits, and responses to expected and unexpected environmental circumstances.
