Reflection: Student Ownership Studying Our Earth Day 2 - Section 1: Finishing Our Research

Student research can have several benefits. One is that students can often choose a topic of interest. When students are following their own interests they are more motivated to read and find out. They are excited about creating a presentation when it has to do with something they are interested in.

Another benefit of student research is that students find things out for themselves. They are no longer passive learners listening to the teacher, but instead they are actively engaged in their own learning.

Second graders love to research. It may be necessary to help them find resources with an appropriate reading level, but if you are using the internet, try typing in the topic and the words for kids (i.e. bears for kids). You will get a list of resources that are more appropriate for young readers this way.

Research is a great way to encourage independent learning.
