Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Planes in Space - Section 3: Share and Summarize


I love this lesson because it really brings together so many concepts that we have studied. Things like the dot product and cross product can seem over the top and unnecessary in isolation, but now we have a reason for them as we find the equation of a plane.

On the other hand though, at the end of this lesson it can be difficult to make this process of finding the equation of a plane more than just a set of steps to memorize. To combat this I try to assign homework problems that have a variety of givens. By changing what we know about the plane, it becomes less about following the same procedure every time and more about thinking through what we need to know in order to write the equation. For example, some problems give three points on the plane while others may give a point on the plane and a plane perpendicular.
