Reflection: Student Ownership "Sailing with Cents" - Section 3: Explore

 

 

As teachers, we sometimes have to change our roles. It is important to step back from the teaching role and begin to coach students as they attempt to accomplish goals. In this lesson, I was able to coach the students as they attempted to build a strong boat. As I stepped back, it allowed the kids to explore and be creative thinkers. I noticed one group of students was able to work cooperatively to create a boat that held 22 pennies. It was exciting to see the students use creativity to build an effective design.

Objective: SWBAT design and build a boat to hold as many pennies as possible before sinking.

Big Idea: Students use the engineering design process to create a boat to hold the most pennies.
