Reflection: Complex Tasks Let's Get Atomic - Investigating Historical Models (Part 1/2) - Section 3: Explore


Research projects have so many pitfalls that can derail students from the end goal: obtaining, evaluating and communicating relevant information from various sources (SP8). With the wide range of reading levels, level of engagement, available resources, level of competency and available distractions, teaching students how to conduct efficient research is a great challenge - especially when students are tasked to do so about complex technical topics. Some strategies to set your students up for success include:

1) Find Research Experts: identify expert students who can act as mentors or consultants for students who need more support.

2) Develop a Texts: Write or find texts that are leveled, organized, include the relevant information in simplified ways and have appropriate visuals.

3) Develop a Curated List of Texts: Find (or have students share as they find) great resources that can be posted. I will go so far as to require students to use those texts first before going out into the great big World Wide Web!

4) Use Technology: Kid- friendly web-sites, Google Apps like TLDR and programs that will read text to students help students navigate the sea of information.

5) Provide Graphic Organizers: This more structured approach provides students with the information needed to complete the research and an organized way to record their findings.

6) I-We-You Modeling: Model the art of "Scuba Diving" rather than "Surfing" the internet for information. Helping students understand that skimming over the top of many resources doesn't result in the depth of information desired. Show students how to navigate texts so that they are more likely to go deeper into the text.

7) Enlist Your Language Arts Teammates: Ask for resources or team up with other teachers to teach research skills so that they can practice in science class. This approach helps students learn that research skills span disciplines and helps teachers reach more standards within one project.
