Reflection: LIterary Discussion Roles: Word Wizard - Section 2: Getting Down to Business

One of my biggest goals for 7th grade students is to make meta-cognition a part of their educational experience.  I want them to start thinking about their thinking (I say this so often in class that students start saying it with me by about November!).

At the beginning of the year, I will let students write, "I didn't know what it meant" when asked about why they looked up a word.  However, by the time we're ready to start Lit Circle discussions, I want more from them.

This is the lesson where I challenge them to think more deeply about their reasons for wanting to know the definition of a word.  How does knowing the meaning clarify the story?

This is a hard thing for 12-year-old to do, but it's something I think is so valuable as we continue to move towards the critical thinking required of the Common Core.
