Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Plant Parts: The Root - Section 3: Explore

 

I decided to have the students go outside and find a weed to pull out of the ground.  Once we were back int he classroom, I asked them to identify the root type as part of a group discussion.  I did this for two reasons.  First of all, I felt like this would allow them to apply the knowledge from our root discussion.  Secondly, the students needed to take a break (because of lack focus).  So I had them go outside to walk around and turned it into an extension at the same time.

Big Idea: Why do plants need roots? Do all root systems look alike? Today your students will find the answers to these questions as they explore the root!
