Reflection: Moths - Section 5: Closing

 

When I am teaching my science lessons, I always encourage the students to share with their parents what they learned.  Books, like the one included with this lesson, make that sharing easier for the students.  They can read the book with their parents, or use it as a reminder of what they have learned. 

After this moth lesson, I had several parents comment that they learned a great deal about moths from their child.  They said some of the information they were not aware of until it was shared by their child.  They went on to share how enthusiastic their children are about science and how this sharing was almost a ritual.  When they asked how school was, the response usually had something to do with science.

Science excites and motivates so many students.  It needs to be present in the curriculum on a consistent basis and not be something that just get hit on here or there.  My students have learned so much about science and I couldn't be prouder.  They understand how much they have learned this year and they love sharing it.  The book in this lesson is a great way for my students to share their learning.  I am going to continue to create books like these on various science topics to give my students a tool for sharing their learning.

Objective: Students will be able to compare characteristics of moths and butterflies by creating a book.

Big Idea: The students were excited to learn about butterflies. This lesson helps them to understand the butterfly's close relative, the moth.
