Reflection: Analyzing How the Use of Dialect Establishes Tone and Reveals Characters in "Drenched In Light" - Section 3: Students Learning Activity

This student's responses to the first three basic understanding questions where accurate but when asked in the third question to describe Isis's personality, the student was limited in his description of "joyful."  The defiance that Isis demonstrated through the interaction with her grandmother was missed.  The common core standard RL.9-10.3 requires students to analyze how a character develops through the story and interacts with other characters.  I wanted to push this student to think deeper about the complexity of the character Isis. To do this I asked this student to re-read the first page, underline words that describe her character and then determine if anything could be added to Isis's personality.  The student then realized that the petulant behavior expressed a frustration that she was feeling towards her grandmother's expectations.
