Reflection: ELL Students Day One of Plaid Pete is Going Down! - Section 6: Reflection & Closure


I created these cards out of desperation!  I couldn't get my students to independently use models as tools for learning.  The Next Generation Science Standards are very clear that students need to be able to not only construct models, but to actively use them as tools for thinking and learning.  My students appeared to see them as simple illustrations to decorate their lab pages.  

We still have a long way to go, but I am pleased with this strategy.  It combines what I know to be effective practice with English Language Learners - using sentence stems and socially mediated learning, in a way that will scaffold their acquisition of how to use models as a vehicle for understanding Science content.
