Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Better Than Gold - Section 3: After You Read

Why are active reading strategies important?

There are a variety of active reading strategies you could use in your classroom. They all have benefits for students that will increase academic achievement. Choose the one(s) that best suit the learning experience.

I know that students like to be engaged in the text. They like to read out loud. They like to highlight important information. They like to make connections. I see their enthusiasm and interest when I work with small reading groups.

For reading to be meaningful, students need to :

  • Know the purpose of the text.
  • Preview the material.
  • Make connections to the content.
  • Interact with the text by annotating.
  • Underline, highlight, and take notes.
  • Understand how the images correlate to the text.
