Reflection: Staircase of Complexity The Power Rule - Section 3: Share

Proving the Power Rule is a very important part of this lesson. I really feel that it needs to be done with your students and is not optional. Many of my students already knew the Power Rule (either from figuring it out themselves, or the textbook, or from other students), but when I asked them why it was true no one knew why.

Once we went through the proof it made a lot of sense to them and they understood where it came from. It was also a good reminder of the Binomial Theorem and some of the different limit properties. While I would never expect them to replicate this proof themselves, it is really important that they understand where this rule comes from, especially since they will be using so frequently in calculus.

The Power Rule

Unit 13: Limits and Derivatives
Lesson 5 of 13

Objective: SWBAT use the Power Rule to find the derivative function.

Big Idea: Surely we don't have to go through all that work to find the derivative - there must be a shortcut!
