In the video below, i take a look at a common student preconception: the force acting on M1 (the mass on the table of this warmup problem) is M2 (the overhanging mass). They are certainly right that gravity drives thus system. In terms of drawing free-body diagrams and writing net force equation, however, this idea can get in the way.
