Reflection: Performance Tasks All About Plants - Section 1: Writing Our Books

The books are a way for me to assess student understanding of what plants are and how they grow. I am hoping that students know the parts of the plant, that plants need sunlight, soil and water to grow and that seeds can be spread in different ways. I also hope to see evidence that students understand that not all plants are alike in both their needs and their looks.

I assess the books during writing by talking to students about what they have written, and also after students are done with their work. I collect the books before sending them home and look for how well students have explained their understandings.

I use the assessment to determine what information about plants I might want to reteach to some or all of the students.
