Reflection: Checks for Understanding Analyze Function of Words and Syntax - Section 3: Remarkable Moves, Line by Line


This was one of those lessons that feels great as a teacher.  The groups got almost all the parts of speech correct, and the couple they didn't get were those tricky ones that many people aren't sure about (is "down" an adverb or a preposition?).  They still had some trouble with the clauses and phrases, but this poem is great for teaching those, not only the constructions but the function, because, for instance, the first sentence is one independent clause with lots of prepositional phrases (an opportunity to emphasize how prepositional phrases provide the circumstances in which the subject is doing something), while the second sentence is one line but two clauses.   Once we worked on a couple lines, students other than the groups assigned the line began contributing and noting different functions.  For example, one student recognized the parallel constructions in the first 3 lines with prepositional phrases beginning with "of."  So, while I still have to read what they wrote for the homework, these activities certainly showed growth in their understanding.
