Reflection: Trust and Respect Eye Dissection - Section 2: Explain

Most of my students enjoy completing dissections, as they provide students with a hands on way to explore anatomy.  Each year I have some students who, for a variety of reasons, would prefer not to complete the dissection. Two weeks prior to the dissection, I inform the students that if they do not want to complete the dissection, they need to provide me with a written explanation providing information about why they do not want to perform the dissection and they will be permitted to complete an alternative activity.

I have the students complete the writing not so much because I care about the reason, but to ensure that the student is serious about completing the alternative activity. Prior to using the method of having students write an explanation, I would have students say they wanted to do the alternate activity and I would spend time preparing the activity only to have the student change their mind on the day of the dissection.

The students who do not complete the dissection in the lab, complete online activities and view a video of a cow eye dissection.
