Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge A New Way to Locate Points - Section 2: Explore

While working I noticed that many students were using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the r value. While this is a good strategy, it was taking a while to find these values. When we had our discussion, I showed them how they could write the ordered pairs as multiples of unit circle values (as shown here). Thus, these points are scaled versions of special right triangles so we only need to determine the factor to find the r value.

A New Way to Locate Points

Unit 11: Parametric Equations and Polar Coordinates
Lesson 3 of 12

Objective: SWBAT convert from polar coordinates to rectangular or vice versa.

Big Idea: Instead of left and right directions, angle measures and radii can also specify a location.
