Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Acid and Base Calculations - Section 3: Elaborate

When students were asked to label the chart with acid/base/neutral I noticed that a lot of students wanted to put acids at the bottom of the chart.  I realized that this was because all of the charts that they had already seen (from the lab during the previous lesson as well as during the notes) had acids on the bottom.

For next year I will change the chart so that it is flipped to avoid this confusion.

Additionally, I had a question (#2) which had students determining OH- from H+ which I did not teach this year so I changed that question as well.

Here is a copy of the new revised paper that shows this change.

Acid and Base Calculations

Unit 7: Unit 8: Water Quality
Lesson 7 of 11

Objective: Students will be able to calculate the pH, pOH, [H+], and [OH-] for solutions as demonstrated by taking notes, performing practice questions, and completing an activity.

Big Idea: Acids and Bases have characteristic pH, pOH, [H+], and [OH-] values which can be calculated.
